This is a very nicely designed product, but execution on our sample was poor. Beyond the typo in the instructions for our car, the quality of the item is not up to Thule standards. The right lower retaining strap mechanism is very stiff and the range of cable that we can use is limited. We can use it, but the stiff mechanism makes it more difficult to mount than it should be. And it won't be useable for those vehicles that require a shorter or longr amount of cable. Given the condition of the box and the instructions, I suspect that the supplier sent us one that had been returned to them. If we had purchased this in a local store, we would demand an exchange. Given the fact we bought this through mail order, we feel greatly disadvantaged.

I purchased this rack primarily for general use hauling two hybrid bicycles on short trips. This summer, however, I took the rack along with the bikes on a 1200 mile trip to the Outer Banks, NC. It was easy to set up and secure, but having another person to help makes the task much simpler. I advise making semi-frequent stops after the rack is first attached to tighten the straps and secure the unit's grip as it settles into place.
Nothing beats the steel cables, period. They are impervious to stretching and provide peace of mind when traveling with bicycles attached.
You will need a method of securing the front wheel to the down tube or rear wheel unless you intend to remove the front wheel. I would also suggest some way of inhibiting the rear wheel and pedals from spinning if it occurs. I prefer to bungee or tie all moving parts to a stationary part of the rack or neighboring bike to prevent any wear. I did not have a problem with vehicle damage as I thoroughly cleaned and waxed the trunk before attaching the rack.
Be sure you follow the installation instructions and avoid placing the bottom of the rack against the bumper on a sedan or hatchback. Not only will this prevent the trunk from opening, it will also likely crack the bumper due to pressure when tightening the cables.
I consider this rack to be an excellent investment since it has proven itself for road trip use without a hiccup.

What are the requirements for a truck mounted rack? That the bikes are stable at all speeds and that they are secured to the rack (which is then secured well to the car). The Thule Raceway takes care of all these in spades. Having used less expensive Bell and Allen racks, this one really blows them away. The fit is so easy to customize I can't imagine it not working on most factory cars out there (except perhaps a WRX STi, Evo, Celica GT....any of those huge spoiler cars). It fits over the factory spoiler of my 2004 Toyota Corolla S perfectly without touching it (something that the cheaper units could not do). The ratcheting steel cables are infinitely easier to use than nylon straps, and the fact that the rack can be locked to the car, and bikes to the rack make me feel much more confident when going to post-ride meals or mall/store runs. The arms are very strong and the bikes hardly move at all regardless of vehicle speed. Finally, the ease at which the arms fold down and come back up to position (excellent fine tuning ability in regards to arm height) makes it great for those of us who leave the rack on the car 99% of the time.
The bikes that I carry are a 19.5" Trek 4900 MTB and a 15" GT Aggressor 3.0 MTB which fit without any issue.
